About The Event
We're hosting our Girls Engaged in Making (GEM) workshops for girls in ages 8-15. Studies have shown that most girls lose interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by age 15. Our GEM Workshops are aimed at providing girls with hands-on activities and experiences to keep them involved in STEM. GEM is fun, engaging, educational, and shows the numerous ways STEM topics can be pursued.
First Saturdays of Each Month*
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm

Upcoming Workshops 2019-2020
This year's GEM Workshops study various women in science with hands-on activities at every session that showcase each scientist's contributions to the world.
Sally Ride and Mae Jamison- Space Rocketry
GEMs will design and build rockets to highlight the accomplishments of Sally Ride, the first american woman in space in 1983, and Mae Jamison, who was the first African-American woman in space in 1992.
Vera Rubin- Astronomy
GEMs will explore different NASA investigations and making their very own solar necklace to take home.
Maria Sibylla Merian- Naturalism & Etymology with special guest educator, Bridget Lyons, from Torch Technologies
GEMs will learn how Maria Sibylla Merian illustrated her scientific works based in nature and discover the "secret signals" insects give to one another like the use of aposematic coloring while exploring our yard to inspire GEMs as they create their own watercolor pieces.
Nettie Stevens- Genetics
GEMs will dive into the science behind DNA extraction while completing their own extraction tests and genetic investigations.
Rachel Carson- Environmental Science
GEMs will conduct experiments on erosion and how humans impact the environment in our final workshop of the school year.
*Workshop themes are subject to change depending on guest speakers. Stay tuned to this page for updates.
